Facts About Chihuahua

Population: 671, 790

Pronounced: Chi-Wau-Wah

Chihuahua occupies an area of 244,938 square kilometers, making it the largest state in Mexico. Chihuahua occupies nearly 13% of Mexico’s total land space. It is located south of Texas, and it borders to the west with Sonora, to the south with Sinaloa and Durango and to the East with Coahuila. Its climate is dry to semi-arid and there is regular rainfall during summer and temperatures vary from extreme hot to extreme cold. Chihuahua is well known for the Copper Canyon, which is almost 300 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon. Also Chihuahua is famous for cattle breeding, apple crops, and dairy products. Chihuahua City was officially founded at the start of the eighteenth century and its historic buildings stand scattered around the busy downtown area. Chihuahua's atmosphere is truly Mexican and deeply patriotic, which adds remarkably to the sense of history present here. Its remoteness from the traditional colonial heartland means that it hosts fewer tourists than its colonial counterparts.

Getting to Chihuahua

You can get to Chihuahua City by plane from Mexico City, Monterrey, Tijuana, La Paz, and destinations in the USA including Los Angeles, Houston and San Antonio. Driving to Chihuahua City from the southern border of the United States (El Paso, Texas) at Ciudad Juarez will take you about 4 hours on Toll Road 45. The distance between Stillwater and Ciudad Juarez is around 880 miles.

Currency Exchange

Banks with ATM machines can be found throughout Chihuahua City. During business hours, the Casas de Cambio (banks) will buy traveler's checks or cash.

Chihuahua City

The Chihuahua City atmosphere can be described as typically Mexican and patriotic with a deep sense of history about it. Luckily, its remoteness from the traditional colonial heartland means that it is not a hot bed for tourists. This progressive city is located in the center of the state. Although it is a medium-sized city, it is full of places to visit and activities for every lifestyle.

The climate in Chihuahua is dry to semi-arid, though there is regular rainfall and occasional extremes in temperature. The average annual temperature is 68º F.

Things to Do

Only three hours southwest of the City, adventurers can explore Copper Canyon. The entire Copper Canyon region comprises almost a third of the state. The Samalayuca Desert is only 300 Km. north of the city. The sand dunes can be seen for about 8 km along the highway. Some high dunes are only a few steps from the side of the road. Although many parts of Mexico have deserts, very few of them are so arid that they actually have hills of fine sand like this one.

Paquime ruins are found only 300 Km. northwest of the capital city. Paquime was a pre-hispanic city, and its cultural influence can be felt in Chihuahua, Sonora (Mexico), as well as in Arizona and New Mexico.
